About Sharon Russell
An artist since childhood, Sharon Russell has always aspired to express her passion for a deeper connection with soul, nature and archetypal energies. She creates from the place of dreams and visions, fairy tales and myths. Her art delicately expresses the wisdom of profound teachings. Her attention to color and line is precise, original and meaningful in every detail.
Sharon has also always been intrigued with the beauty and mystery of the archetypal images of the feminine, as well as the sacred kinship between people and animals. As a child she felt an intense connection with the Virgin Mary and loved to say prayers next to images of her in church.
Sharon grew up in the Pacific Northwest with her three siblings, lumberjack father, and mother from New York City. Sharon loved the green trees and grass of the forests and the beautiful colorful flowers her sophisticated mother planted around their house. These natural images often show up in her work.
After graduating from California State Long Beach, Sharon worked for over 10 years in the graphic design field in Los Angeles while painting and creating serigraphs. No longer satisfied to just do beautiful images, she began to ask herself "what is my message?"--with no immediate answer.
Eventually, Sharon went back to school to study Jungian and Transpersonal Psychology and was a psychotherapist for 15 years, during which time she participated in women's groups, some of which had themes of the goddess.
Then one day in 1999, she began to be flooded with images of the feminine that had an uplifting and inspiring message. Some of them came in dreams, some during meditation, and some while she sat with pencil and paper. Many watercolor paintings later, the idea of using the dragon to explain the story of the shadow and individuation was created.
In 2013, the "Dragon Story" came to life in Sharon's art book, Innocence to Wholeness: Journey of the Heroine. This story of our inner and outer dragons is portrayed in a series of archetypal images to encourage a new understanding of the mythology of our life.
Animals are commonly featured in Sharon's work. She feels a special kinship with them, and feels strongly that they need to be treated with our love and respect.
Sharon newest book, LightBearer: The Soul's Journey in Astrology illuminates the unique nature of each astrological sign's archetypal energy and characteristics. Each powerful image is accompanied by compassionate prose to inspire a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.
Sharon has lived in Ojai, California since 1984 and continues to create her storybook-mythological watercolor images. Her images can be bought in fine art prints, digital prints, and art cards. Sharon has recently made available for purchase several of her original paintings.
Sharon's art is on permanent display at Made in Ojai. Her next gallery exhibit will be at Bohemia Art Cafe in late 2015, in Ojai, California, a tranquil haven for the enjoyment of art, spirituality, and nature.
